While these groups typically represent as little as 20 percent of the university population, they often account for as much as 90 percent of the computer center professional staff. Secondly, we need to develop readily available social science data bases for use in secondary analysis. The range of alternatives here goes from Dartmouth's Project IMPRESS through the services of the Inter-University Consortium for Political Research (ICPR) at Ann Arbor, to census tapes and survey data from purveyors such as the National Opinion Research Council (NORC), the American Insti-tute of Public Opinion (A1PO), and others. If IMPRESS were readily transportable and if ICPR service were less expensive, the needs of the social and behavioral science community would be well served.

My feeling is that one ought to emphasize the requirements that underlie and the limitations that accompany each statistical measure rather than its computational formula. Today puberty is happening to younger
girls. When Area and I wrote our first book, most girls were in the sixth grade or higher before they started. Now, the first signs of puberty often happen to a girl in the third or fourth grade. (Sometimes even earlier!) So I've written this book for girls of all ages. I think younger girls will like it. But it's not just for younger girls. It is written for all of you who are thinking about or going through puberty.

The attitudes of Western bohemians regarding sexual relations with the Balinese were often ambivalent, if not even hypocritical. Although his account of events could be tainted by his later involve-ment in litigation between Manx and the Kokes,4' it is significant that he says, 'it is indeed true that Kctut Tantri and Anak Agung Ngurah were intimate friends'.4^ More controversial, however, arc daims, including those of Ngurah's daughter, that Manx 'had an affair' with Oka and then became Ngurah's mistress. She was, Munenjaya claims, installed in the Demulih bungalow as Ngurah's Western concubine.
K'tut Tantri has always vehemently denied that there was any form of sexual relationship between herself and Ngurah. In fact, as mentioned, she has vetoed several screenplay adaptations of Revolt in Paradise soldy on the basis that they imply such a relationship. In support of her daims, Bob Koke says that Tampa 'was flabbergasted' when asked by him whether the relationship between Manx and Ngurah was sexual. 'He told me the Radja[']s son already had one wife and how impossible it would look for him to have Manx as a second wife. It gave him quite a laugh.'47 In a sense, this comment carefully avoids mbt shoes clearance the issue. It was at Bangli that Krause was stationed and much of his book is based on his experiences there40—indeed, the elderly raja he describes being treated by a Western doctor was probably the same raja that K'tut Tantri claims adopted her.
According to Ngurah's daughters, Anak Agung Ayu Rai and Anak Agung Istri Agung (and her son, Anak Agung Gcde Munenjaya), Ngurah did not die in the revolution as ugg K'tut Tantri claims, but went on to become raja of Bangli after his father's death e.1939, which position he retained until his death around 1960—signific-antly, about the time Revolt in Paradise was published. He was, they say, a short, plump man, who, as their photographs suggest, closely resembled his grandson, Munenjaya. According to his children, Ngurah was never educated in Europe, nor was he a revolutionary hero. Rai remembers K'tut Tantri well (she was around ten years old when 'Nyonya Meng' arrived uggs in Bangli). Most of these poor peasants were artists of talent and power of expression.29
The depiaion of the royal courts of Bali in Revolt in Paradise docs, however, go beyond this palace/peasant dichotomy in one important respect. The book deals with the Indonesian revolution, which was to strip Indonesian royalty of its power. So in Revolt in Paradise, the new, Western-derived nationalist movement that aims to sweep away the world of the raja and the contrast between his world and that of the kampong is symbolized by the figure of Anak Agung Nura. who. although the raja's son and Dutch-educated, prepares for revolution and freedom. In this sense. Nura becomes a bridge between the ugg boots sale ancien rSgime of the Balinese courts and its radical revolutionary future, as well as a link between the two parts of the narrative, para-disaical Bali and revolutionary Indonesia. Politically active and enjoying Western literature, he is still part-feudal. He is an active radical nationalist and Skechers shape ups is cducatcd in Western ways but, like his father, Nura is happy to marry more than one wife and never seems to understand precisely why this is unacceptable to K'tut Tantri.

Dying as a heroic revolutionary later in the book, he is presented at the outset as K'tut Tantri's romantic male counterpart, a noble idealist who, like her, bridges East and West. The controversy about this rdationship came to play a central role in K'tut Tantri's life once Revolt in Paradise was published. In mbt shoes fact, as will be seen, her long-sought goal of a film based on the book was frustrated largdy because she would not alter her portrayal of that relationship as platonic.31 The con-stant struggle between K'tut Tantri and other Westerners to decide mbt whose perception of her cross-cultural and cross-racial romance would triumph illumines much about Western perceptions of such relationships and, for that matter, the Western construct of'oriental' sexuality, a construct, in this case, dosely related to the portrayal of 'oriental' royalty.Although theirs is. seemingly a platonic attachment of like minds, mbt shoes clearance Nura, none the less, repeatedly—and unsuccessfully—seeks K'tut Tantri's hand in marriage; and, as K'tut Tantri acknowledges, 'on the surface he appeared what he might easily have been, a playboy like so many Eastern princelings'.

For Baum (and her 'ghost-writer', Walter Spies) as for Krause, the Balinese monarchy becomes the symbol of a fading and ir-relevant social order, remaining only to allow the entry of a modern, Western-created, new order. This view was, to a large extent, fa-voured by the Dutch. Being the agents of the destruction of the power of the Balinese courts, the Dutch preferred ugg boots to see the 'true' Bali as identified with the villages and their peasantry. They could then sec themselves less as responsible for the collapse of a civiliza-tion and more as those who liberated the essential village civilization from the tyranny of an unnecessary despotic veneer.
Boon tics this imagery of a 'royal' Bali to a perception of Bali as an Indian, rather than Pacific culture. Although he speculates as ugg boots uk to what a ugg 'different picture' might have evolved of Bali if the first ethnolo-gists had arrived with Pacific, rather than Indian, stereotypes in mind, he emphasizes that this did not happen.22 The imagery of an Indianized interpretation of Balinese social structures, dwelling on the social authority, and ethical inadequacies of the Balinese princes, was favoured by the Dutch and uggs colonial supporters such as Krause23 but it did not belong only to them. As we have seen, it was adopted by Baum, who was a close associate of non-establishment figures such as Spies. Significandy, it is also the model used by K'tut Tantri when she presents the Balinese raja who, she claims, adopted her as a 'daughter of the palace' and named her as his fourth-born.
The raja in Revolt in Paradise, while kind and generous to K'tut Tantri, is essentially a doddering and irrelevant traditionalist, who 'sulks' and 'collapses with rage' when traditions arc not adhered to.24 Incapable of understanding the ways of the West, he is naive and amusing, when confronted with modernity. When taken to visit an American naval vessel anchored off the coast, for example, 'the old man', kris tucked into his 'most splendid raiment', was 'like a child at his mbt shoes clearance first circus'.25 Served with ice-cream he overeats and is a little squeamish later, particularly on the launch from the ship to the shore'.26 Later, he requested an 'ice-cream-making-device' from the captain. He receives a refrigerator which, rendered useless because there is no electricity available, he refuses to sell and uses instead as a wardrobe.By contrast to her raja's befuddled, if well-intentioned, world of arbitrary and childish tradition, K'tut Tantri presents us with the people of the kampongs.
